Good degu cages should also be made of chew-proof wire or other bite-resistant material, since degus can chew through plastic and wood and escape. Be sure that any wire cage you use for degus has bars spaced less than a half-inch to an inch apart and a solid surface (not wire) bottom to protect delicate degu feet and hold lots of fresh bedding for burrowing, playing and elimination.

You could use a glass aquarium or vivarium for degus, as the material would be adequate to prevent chewy degu escapes, but know that these can trap heat and tend not to have enough ventilation or vertical height for degus.
