To keep your mouse happy and your cage tidy, you'll need to get some good mouse litter and bedding to line your cage with. Chewy carries all the best mouse litter and bedding types and brands, so you'll have no trouble finding the perfect material for the bottom of your cage. Here are a few things to know before choosing a new mouse bedding for your habitat.
The ideal mouse litter and bedding material will be dust-free, odor- and moisture-absorbing, and comfortable for your pet. Most paper bedding for small animals fits these criteria and has the added benefit of being compostable and biodegradable, too. You can find paper bedding in many different textures and piece sizes, and it comes in lots of fun colors, as well. Paper bedding also saves on fuel use by being lightweight, and some of it is made from recycled pulp to reduce the strain on the environment. You can also use shredded paper as a cheap mouse bedding material, but make sure to use ink-free or non-toxic printed paper and avoid newsprint.
Avoid mouse litter and bedding made from cedar or unprocessed pine shavings, as their aromatic oils can cause respiratory distress in your pets. Soft aspen shavings are dust-free, odor-free and suitable for mice, but they can be less absorbent than paper and may not reduce odor as well. You can also use kiln-dried pine shavings that are free from harmful aromatic oils, or try a product made from eco-friendly pelleted wheat straw.

Put at least three inches of mouse-safe bedding on the bottom of the cage. Choose bedding made of pelleted paper, non-aromatic wood shavings like aspen or even hay. You can also provide different types of bedding so your mice can decide what to build their nests with. Putting more absorbent litter like paper in areas where mice like to use the toilet can help with odor control.
The difference between mouse bedding and litter is that you put mouse litter in a litter box for elimination and bedding at the bottom of the cage for resting, digging and playing. If your mouse does not use a litter box, your mouse bedding will serve the same function as litter, catching waste and absorbing moisture and odor. The best substrates for mouse bedding often work well in a litter box, as well. Just be sure to use different substrates for bedding and for litter so your mouse knows where to "go".
Usually, mice do need bedding and litter in their cage, although you can just use bedding throughout if your mouse cage doesn't have a litter box. Choose an absorbent, mouse-safe bedding and/or litter like paper or aspen wood shavings. Pellet litters can work well as bedding and litter for mice, as well.
